Abroad to America

Abroad to America

Sorry for the post abscence, but my year has started off quite stressed. I had to go to America spontaneously for, unfortunately, a funeral. I had to go to my grandparents home in Alabama. It started out with a completely complicated flight but

Three countries and three layovers later

I just get the feeling they are always trying to overcompensate for something…

I arrived in the home of the brave… on Inauguration day

Definetly a yuge culture shock.

but luckily for me in my third layover I was greeted by a happy and familiar face

Dear DFW, Its been real, and its been good. but hasnt quite been real good

I arrived in Birmingham shortly after, and the events began.

To be honest. I am not the best with loss, and it was a very hard week. I am beyond thankful I am a runner, it was the best coping method I could have had to fall back on.

My grandma passed away and it brought up so many feelings from previous losses. My family is not so big and going back has always been hard. Luckily for me there was a great running track near my grandfathers house I was able to escape to in between runs around the neighborhood

aka Shin splint city

I think I got in a good 28 km that week. It would have been more except for crazy southern thunderstorms. but I tried my best to get out whenever  the sky was moderately clear

IMG_0591.JPG

The trip as  whole was a good time for getting the closure I think I ultimately desired. My mind is still a bit distracted, but now that I am back in Munich I am my most happiest. I am so thankful I have found a place to call home and above all feel home.I can hop away to the mountains on the weekend or run around the city and work my way back up after a fall.

Whenever life gets hard, its good to be able to just go home. For me this is Munich.

We never quite get over our losses. But I do believe we tend to absorb them and they carve us into different, often kinder creatures

Perusing about Prague

Perusing about Prague

” Youth is happy because it has had the ability to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old”

Franz Kafka

FullSizeRender.jpg

I have read so many posts about how “magical” Prague is. Many people write about its “fairytale feeling”

FullSizeRender 2.jpg

I must admit, that even in a frosty snowy wonderland of weather, the city failed to give me these feelings. It was a bit of something else.

fullsizerender-13
FYI dear readers Praha is Czech for Prague

Prague stood out to me most due to its history. Dealing with the Nazi occupation of WWII and still coming out with most of it medieval old town still intact is a very impressive site to see.

fullsizerender-16

The city’s architecture mixture alone was one aspect I was pleased about; Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque

designs are mixed together with a high dose of Parisian feel.

Some areas of the city were a visual splendour

and some provided the cozy atmosphere I so crave in my travel down time.

With all these sweet views, came the sweet tourist trap that is

Trdelník

A sweet pastry that is made from dough wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with a sugar and walnut mixture. It has a distinct wood and smoke flavour. Not entirely sweet but if you choose the modern version I did with nutella, its a pretty good taste combination.

fullsizerender-19
Modern takes on the treat include ice cream and other fun filling options

In the end to me Prague had a feeling of sweet melancholy.

fullsizerender-12

The tall building created endless hallways. The new was well mixed in with the old and the poor with the rich

The culture and history does not hide.It endured generations of foriegn domination-the Nazi occupation and Communist rule. Once the Iron curtain cracked it became one of the first Central and East European countries to embrace the western culture. However with this came naturally the party seekers and their drunken exploits, tacky tourist shops and Tescos galour.

fullsizerender-20
Puppet shops in every corner

but the marvelous part was how enduring the character of Prague stayed. This city pushes to create a good integration of the old and the new. Making it unlike anyone I have ever been before.

Central New Town sites

Even though it has these cultural and historical marvels I admire, I must admit it was not my favourite city. Perhaps because I enjoy lighter atmospheres, the food was not to my taste palette or I am too biased by previous experiences, I am not entirely certain. It was a good experience but I will choose to continue to head on to new places and most likely not head back too soon

woke up like dis

YES winter is finally here. With it came snow, glorious, super snow. Unlike what I assume to be the majority of the population, I am extremely overwhelmed and over joyed by this weather. I love running in snow, walking in snow and day dreaming from my office window as it snows. The chill in the air and the silence of everywhere that comes with that frosty white cushioning just gives my heart little pitter patters.

FullSizeRender 16.jpg
s’no day like a snow day

The city becomes more alive. It is so bright, hopeful and beautiful. The sky becomes an extra magnificient shade of blue and the rivers flow with a little more grace than average. I find Munich to just be the best place to go for chilly strolls. What can I say, I am a little winter romantic.

fullsizerender-18

I like to often imagine I am in a snow globe or a Thomas Kinkade picture. Although I do love my outdoor activities

Running in a winter wonderland

I find that there are a lot of cozy indoor activities to revel in. In Munich we have so many lovely museums, exhibits and naturally, oodles of cafes.

Am ende wird alles gut

Am ende wird alles gut

Originally I had in mind to write a proper running post about the fantastic feeling New Years Eve running event, but in the end I think it was more so the feeling and what it stood for. Instead of another race day it was a day for reflection and the delightfulness that came along.

fullsizerender-9

It was so lovely. We ran the event in Olympia Park in Munich, it looked absolutely spectacular. A perfect sporty winter wonderland.

The night had frozen over and dusted the landscape with white. Everything ever so lightly twinkled, and glittered in the bright sunlight.

My friend Cora came along, she is absolutely darling. Not much of a sporty person. A hiker yes, but when it comes to other events, she tends to avoid. However unfamiliar with the activities she is, I really admire her ability to just shrug and say why not. I’ve previously invited her to events-we did a spontanious charity 10km in fall- and this time she agreed in the same nonchalant manner.

IMG_9815.JPG

I had aqcuired some nasty shin splints the last week from training so Cora and I managed to only do the 5km event.

FullSizeRender 7.jpg

It was a short and sweet run. The air stung a bit and our hands turned bright pink. We paced ourselves and jogged it out at an average race pace. We were the middle women, just there to get our bright and cheery morning workout.

FullSizeRender 13.jpg
FInishers mug. *points for creativity

This start of the day was lovely and set my mind off on a good reflection of the year. I have come to think until then about how difficult the year was. It seemed to be one of those times when everything is against you and nothing goes right. When constantly you feel you cannot get a moment to breathe because you must always struggle to keep your head above water and moving forward.

However, it was not entirely this. The bad seems to outweight the good and cloud our vision. We tend to dwell on mistakes, but now I see these were really valuable times. The challenges taught us to fight through, the hurt taught us how strong we really are inside.I am glad I made some mistakes and I am glad I had go through the trouble I did, because now I am stronger and more prepared for better things. Although it seems I have started at the begining again, I think this is ok and I have accepted it. I believe now as long as you know what you want and stay focused then perhaps things really will always work out in the end.

No, its not a secret confession just the name of  one of my favourite  cafes.

Nestled up cozy in the Glockenbachviertal sits this environmentaly casual cafe. Everything you need and more.

FullSizeRender 5.jpg

Probably one of my top choices when I am craving a good piece of cake ( which I must admit is often my weakness) They have so many options as well. Most of the time gluten free and dairy free are on the menu, woohoo!

FullSizeRender 4.jpg
And that mint infused water, honestly how sweet can you be

Might I go onward and add their weekly menu is fresh ta death.

Every week a new specials menu is posted on their facebook page. The set menu is pretty hard to beat. With fresh baked bread, soups, salads and oh so fabulous brunch options the owner and I are quite familiar with eachother.

Ooh baby  I like it raw opened in September 2015, although I’ve spent most of my time there during this past  summer when they served up some of Munich’s best sunshine ready spritzers. However now that the weathers cooling down, Ive found out they know how to keep the heat up.
