Aspen Abroad meets The ExpatCast

#StartedfromthebottomnowweGerman :)

I had the amazing opportunity to not only see another gorgeous city in Germany (Hi Freiburg duuuu schööne stadt!) and also fulfill my dream of being on a podcast.

I met a wonderful fellow American expat, who has her own expat podcast! We discussed our shared German life stories and tackled the big question: “Is moving abroad solving your problems or running away from them?”

Check the link below to download (for free) and listen to our chat.
Say hi to Nicole and her Expat stories here ⬇

Video transcript: 00:00
these eyes are crying these eyes have seen like a head everybody you know
00:12
welcome back to my channel if you don’t already know my name is Aspen and I’m an
00:16
American living in a wonderful Munich Germany and I talk about what it’s like
00:20
living abroad I talk about expat life on my channel the German comparisons to
00:25
being an American corner here and guess what guys I’m sure you already know but
00:30
there is a bazillion of us it may seem on the Internet
00:34
granted okay there’s only a little handful of youtubers but if you watch my
00:37
channel odds are you probably already watching all of theirs but what I bet
00:42
you didn’t know is there are a growing amount of expat podcasters in Germany
00:47
and me I personally which I will try to avoid
00:50
and ranting but I love podcast oh I love them so much they’re the best thing ever
00:56
if you don’t know a podcast is basically like a radio show what people will do is
01:00
they set aside maybe 45 to 60 minutes and will just sit there off the topic
01:05
and discuss it I listened to a heap of them so a few guys like them comment
01:09
below tell me your favorites and let’s discuss that because yes I got recently
01:15
in contact with another American expat that does an expat podcast and she lives
01:19
over in fiber is in the bottom Wittenberg region in the spot spotted so
01:24
black forest area and she was saying oh we should do a podcast and I was like
01:28
well hey I got some free time on my hands can i maybe just come and visit
01:32
and we do the podcast in person and she was super sweet she was like oh my gosh
01:37
yeah sure do you have anywhere to stay do you want to stay with me to which I’m
01:41
just like what is sweetie pie it’s always a risk somebody’s gonna be weird
01:47
if they offer that you haven’t met them IRL but she was actually super duper
01:52
cool in real life and we had such a fun time I Berg it’s actually a really great
01:56
place I was so busy with work beforehand so I didn’t really play
02:00
and I didn’t really look it up too much lip mmm let’s see oh my gosh me bitch
02:05
boy what’s your girl oh boy – it’s really
02:09
green and really pretty and there’s all these little rivers flowing through the
02:12
town as you get in and actually through the city like in the odd step actually
02:17
how there’s all the canals and rivers that go through it is so precious
02:21
because then then you’re going through the city and you see all these little
02:25
kids and they have these little boats on the strings and they just drag them
02:28
through the canals and it’s just oh it’s so precious my little heart was just so
02:33
full and so excited it was just a very green and clean and beautiful city the
02:38
buildings were so spectacular and beautiful looking it was sort of like
02:42
this little storybook feel to it like I think a lot of us imagine when it’s like
02:46
going to those parts of Germany it is exactly like that so not to be
02:51
disappointed but Green Party was actually in charge of the majority of
02:53
fibers so there’s some interesting aspects to that for example there’s a
02:57
ton of tunnel wall over schools which makes sense okay you know further
03:03
comments I think in general I liked about the city is that it was very well
03:07
regulated and sort of kept tidy and kept clean for example there was this one
03:11
little thing that I thought was so funny is in Germany as a whole we separated
03:16
our trash a lot differently than we would in the stage which we actually
03:20
don’t there it seems to be sort of picky and really particular I know a Munich I
03:25
have my regular trash my paper and my recyclables but in fiber they have
03:31
basically and her dress she mainly had everything’s recyclable so there was the
03:36
paper there was the Buell so the the green waste both the plastic but also
03:41
there was a gibbous sock and this was sort of miscellaneous recyclables and I
03:48
asked her I said okay but where’s the regular trash and she was like well you
03:52
can mainly sort everything we do have like all tiny bin
03:55
the bathroom but other than that basically we sort everything possible
03:59
and recycle it thought that was really really cool it’s very neat I like that
04:03
you’re like I’m gonna go to Germany but I want to see a green green part of
04:07
Germany go to fiber because they really are on the ball I think with that aspect
04:11
in a couple cute little things like the first thing I was there we met her
04:14
friends and he went to a local beer gotten which was it was funny definitely
04:19
different from the kind we have in by n okay yeah now the exciting Guinea part
04:24
or I’m gonna ramble the most I enjoyed the most with her because okay first off
04:29
little tidbits about Nicole I’m not gonna say too much you go find out
04:32
yourselves but she’s from Philadelphia and she actually works there she’s a
04:36
librarian which is the coolest thing to read ever he works for the city and
04:40
she’s learned so many cool things with this within this job position but also
04:44
she has her master’s and sort of librarian sorry Nicole I forgot what
04:49
exactly it’s called but basically she’s a certified librarian I love hearing
04:53
about how all the experts move here and yo do move for love do more for a job or
04:57
certain reasons and once you do come here what is that you do for work how
05:01
did you fall into this category or did you seek out this category it’s so
05:05
interesting so I think for now that’s probably my top favorite story and kind
05:10
of broad career field because I was like oh that’s so cool librarian in the
05:14
States and now a german librarian Wow immersion
05:18
at its finest he does this little expat podcast and i
05:21
really like it i was a-sayin to a couple episodes and i was like wow this
05:24
fantastic you really want me to do what i was the review she has this whole set
05:29
up in her house with all the microphones and technical and guys you think that
05:34
editing videos is tedious but i can’t even imagine how to edit only audio I
05:39
was so worried I would talk too fast and so if you’re going listen to this
05:43
podcast sorry if I sound like a total nerd got
05:46
really nervous and I was like I’m gonna do this bad oh yeah Nicole and
05:54
her boyfriend also brew kombucha which personally I love this beverage it needs
05:59
to make like a popularity spike in Germany as a paper going down to do the
06:04
podcast into their lower level their house and they had all these jars with
06:08
the scobie’s you walk in and you’re like I know baby of course I know so I’m like
06:14
hey if you don’t know what that is ask Opie is basically mushroom like that
06:18
you make kombucha from kombucha is like this fermented carbonated tea beverage
06:24
it’s really good but it’s really gross when you find out how it’s made we did a
06:28
podcast and if you guys are interested links are at the bottom she has a lot of
06:33
other great ones just a whole variety of topics about living abroad or what it’s
06:39
like getting out of your comfort zone and I really like her content in
06:42
particular because it does have more depth to it it does talk about really
06:46
serious sort of matters of the hearts the vulnerability aspects all that
06:51
somewhat hard stuff he faces expats and don’t talk about so much holy snot on
06:57
YouTube because it’s sort of something you need to spend time with and listen
07:03
to it I find it’s really great and it’s really helpful to have that relatability
07:06
but I’m gonna cut this short thin and if you guys want to hear it please to check
07:10
it out it’s really cool thoughts she’s always looking for people to talk with
07:13
who has new stores are you topics to bring and so feel free to contact her
07:19
say hi how’s it going go support her Channel and her Instagram because she
07:24
does post really cool things there too you know I’m very happy to be part of
07:27
this community this aspect uni this online community just ollie all together
07:32
this is a good space so thank you thank you very much for supporting me
07:36
supporting her and supporting the other youtubers and other podcasters all of us
07:41
because at the end of the day I think the most important aspect is that we’re
07:46
all people and being able to create and share this community whether you’re from
07:50
here whether you’re new but just joining together and reminding each other okay
07:54
things are tough things are nice but we all experience
07:59
same and it’s always nice to feel like you’re less alone and that you do have
08:05
somewhere to belong and sometimes it may be it’s harder in the physical world but
08:09
stuff like Nicole’s podcasts you listen to it and go hey hey that’s relatable
08:13
that makes me feel really good about myself and grab something I was feeling
08:17
not so great about as always I hope you guys are having a fabulous day and I
08:22
will talk shmita ciao ciao ciao

Short train trip in beautiful Bavaria!

In this vlog, a new Expat friend and I decided to take a day off for a little Bayern Ticket ausflug to the Neoclassical Walhalla monument in Regensburg…

For fellow history lovers, here’s the scoop: During the mid to late 1800s, Leo von Klenze was the court architect for King Ludwig I.

They then together produced the Greek architectural revival we see much of in Munich (Königsplatz, Glyptothek, Monopteros etc…) but in addition, there’s also the Walhalla building in Regensburg. (This is a temple monument filled with busts of distinguished persons influential in German-speaking history.) Watch the video to get a glimpse!

Video transcript: 00:01 asmr 00:03 testing 00:07 i’m reading tropical but i’m tasting 00:10 armpit 00:15 hello everybody welcome back to my 00:17 channel if you don’t already know 00:20 my name is aspen i’m an american living 00:22 in fantastic munich germany 00:24 and i talk about what it’s like living 00:26 abroad today’s video is not 00:27 really german related it’s actually 00:30 french 00:31 i have a new really great friend also 00:35 youtuber her name is diane and her 00:36 channel is we in france he did the 00:38 sweetest thing and she sent me this big 00:40 christmas package of french 00:42 candies and treats some of them are 00:43 christmasy some of them are normal 00:45 there was this like santa 00:49 kinder thing but when i opened the box 00:53 it was broken but i saw the toy 00:57 oh it’s a christmassy toy if you guys 01:00 don’t already know 01:01 kinder is this chocolate in europe 01:03 there’s usually like the kinder eggs 01:04 inside 01:05 there’s always this little plastic 01:07 seeing the plastic thing 01:08 you open it and there’s always like 01:09 little pieces and then there’s usually 01:11 the little 01:13 instructions this one is christmasy 01:16 i don’t know what this is okay so i’m 01:20 just gonna say 01:21 it’s not that i can’t put children’s 01:23 toys together these are 01:24 tricky the elf he goes on his little 01:27 seat 01:28 [Music] 01:29 back part of the seat 01:31 [Music] 01:33 what these are however here we go manny 01:35 mo 01:37 let’s go with some pretty or some 01:40 i’m ready 01:45 it’s a bear yes very nice 01:48 chocolatey and oh i think it’s 01:51 marshmallow inside 01:58 it’s just almost but not quite and in 02:01 the states marshmallows are really light 02:03 and fluffy and airy and good 02:05 and then and french candy marshmallows 02:07 they’re like 02:08 dense and there’s no fluff 02:11 it’s just a little or in germany they 02:15 have these harry bows that are like 02:17 susan moyes or something like sweet 02:18 little mice and it’s typing with like 02:20 these 02:21 marshmallows but they’re not 02:22 marshmallows they’re just like 02:24 hard pick snacks next oh let’s join 02:26 these um 02:28 oh mojito 02:32 interesting choice 02:35 [Music] 02:38 this is the cutest but goofiest thing 02:41 i’ve ever seen 02:42 so it’s like a little box sort of mojito 02:45 bottles 02:46 oh my goodness i wonder what they taste 02:48 like though 02:51 oh it’s like dark chocolate 02:56 with just this mojito flavor 03:01 but just really stinging alcohol flavor 03:04 [Music] 03:06 thank you diane but this one i oh it’s a 03:09 weird one 03:10 so this one i’m actually excited about 03:12 the caramel 03:13 this one i lived in france this was one 03:16 of my favorite candies yes 03:18 extra bonus points diane you the best 03:22 earlier my camera actually died and i 03:23 took a quick look at the footage 03:25 apologies because my new mic 03:28 is a little bit more sensitive than i’m 03:30 used to i uh 03:31 know how much you can hear my mouth in 03:34 the packages 03:35 but we’re just gonna have to accept this 03:37 is gonna be a bit of a little 03:40 asmr testing 03:45 all right so they look like this 03:48 basically like these little caramel 03:50 things i like these ones because they’re 03:52 like 03:53 not hard hard caramel not like soft 03:56 caramel 03:56 but like middle caramel the texture of 03:59 them 04:02 because they’re really hard like that 04:03 but just still like a little soft 04:05 oh but i’m pretty certain you guys can 04:07 hear like all that’s going on in the 04:08 mouth 04:10 this is caramel but it’s just a little 04:12 bit more 04:14 to it now these ones 04:17 i’m super excited one of these later 04:20 palette cleanse now for something new 04:24 oh man i mean this 04:28 i don’t think you guys can see that so 04:30 we’re just gonna like 04:32 pretend like so we got those done we 04:36 have that 04:36 um let’s try with the bo 04:41 mini fruity strawberry love mmm 04:45 extra soft i believe that’s what that 04:48 word is 04:50 i’m okay with this it comes with like 04:51 how we go and everything 04:53 i don’t like when they’re too hard my 04:56 favorite ones are always like the really 04:57 soft ones 04:59 [Music] 05:02 these smell really good 05:05 that’s why they’re called strawberry 05:07 love oh i can smell the love 05:09 inside 05:13 okay this isn’t my favorite not 05:15 aggressively strawberry flavored 05:19 i’m a happy camper 05:23 nice let’s try these ones captain tiller 05:28 chocolate milk chocolate 05:32 i can’t commit to trying to read 05:33 everything in french it’s i 05:35 didn’t understand it but i just sound 05:36 terrible speaking it how i feel speaking 05:38 is just like basically um 05:43 [Music] 05:48 yeah all these ones are cool promising 06:02 oh that is a crunchy boy 06:07 ones are amazing because they’re so 06:09 light and so crispy 06:11 it’s like if you have the tiniest 06:12 tiniest little bit of little 06:14 crispy thingy like a little tiny little 06:17 little like blanket just a little tucked 06:19 you in a little kiss on the head 06:21 soft on top of caramel rolled it up put 06:25 some chocolate in it 06:26 very delicately then yeah guys like 06:29 french candies i think 06:30 typically when it comes to candy i never 06:33 think 06:34 france is where i want to get my 06:35 favorite candies but 06:38 i don’t know if you guys have any that 06:39 you really enjoy comment below let me 06:41 know 06:42 ooh i think this one’s just sour and i’m 06:45 interested 06:46 pickford 06:50 [Music] 06:56 as i said i can’t pronounce to save my 06:58 life but 07:00 something like i think a fishing line is 07:02 that what that means 07:04 fishing line fishing something about 07:06 fishing 07:07 flavors okay we have 07:10 peach iced tea it’s kind of random 07:19 no raspberry 07:22 [Music] 07:23 pom cassis i don’t quite know what that 07:26 is but 07:27 pom cassie’s framboise something 07:31 something 07:32 raspberry let’s see what these burnt 07:34 heads are all about 07:44 it’s on like donkey kong whoa 07:51 okay 07:52 [Music] 07:55 this is peach iced tea 07:58 i’m here for it i like i like a sour 08:01 gummy rope but the peach ice tea is just 08:04 a strange flavor 08:06 to put in the mix you know like you 08:07 think maybe just like peach but 08:10 i see it does taste like that what’s 08:12 this yellow one 08:13 [Music] 08:16 oh i’m reading tropical but i’m tasting 08:19 armpit 08:20 i’m not a glitter so we’re gonna try all 08:21 these flavors 08:26 [Music] 08:28 okay and then now we have left is the 08:31 this is the whatever i don’t know what 08:34 it is so something something 08:38 raspberry 08:41 i don’t know what flavor this is 08:44 [Music] 08:45 no there’s no match last but not least 08:48 we have the big box of alcohol chalk 08:50 what do we got what do we got oh it’s 08:52 just like a little free-for-all in here 08:55 out here too i like this one that’s 08:57 shaped like a cork so we’re gonna give 08:58 that a go first 09:00 [Music] 09:04 there’s a lot of liquid very strong 09:06 liquid oh my goodness 09:08 those are wet and this one looks a 09:11 little bit like a 09:12 tomato 09:17 so we got the corks down excellent we 09:19 got the cherry bombs 09:20 now we have these other ones which is a 09:22 little ball with a little leaf 09:24 also i don’t get people that do like 09:25 these taste testing videos all the time 09:27 it’s so stressful 09:36 i’m just gonna say like there was some 09:38 good stuff on that care package 09:40 thank you so much diane but 09:44 these are these are rough i can’t 09:47 imagine somebody just being like 09:49 guess who’s getting a treat today it’s 09:50 me i’m gonna just have one of these 09:53 last one we have is the cognac not to be 09:55 confused with the cork we already have 09:56 the cork but now we have the little 09:58 barrel i love it this is adorable i’m 10:00 here for it let’s see 10:04 okay 10:05 [Music] 10:10 no thank you again so much diane 10:13 i’m gonna hang on tight to my 10:16 strawberries 10:18 um um caramels 10:21 since it didn’t fall on the floor these 10:23 are amazing other stuff was good too 10:26 these are stressful if you haven’t 10:28 checked out dan’s channel we in france 10:30 she’s an american expat that talks about 10:33 what it’s like living in france 10:34 links are below go say hi he’s amazing 10:38 and this is probably one of the most 10:39 funnest christmas presents i’ve gotten 10:41 so far i hope you guys are having a good 10:43 day 10:43 and i will talk to you later ciao 10:46 [Music]

all the work
00:51
and once you get through all that
00:52
paperwork you get it you get what you
00:55
worked for and it’s almost
00:57
always nine times out of ten guaranteed
00:59
so
01:00
oh i’m just just way too over the moon
01:04
and excited about all this right now
01:06
i did make a blog post about this in
01:08
case you just need the straight facts
01:10
down
01:10
nicely organized go check it out let me
01:12
know what you think
01:13
so first things first what exactly is
01:17
a needle de loveness or permanent
01:19
residency in germany permanent residency
01:22
you can live here indefinitely and
01:24
you’ll have full free access to the
01:26
labor market however there are
01:28
differences that puts it in the middle
01:30
between the elephant house seattle
01:32
and german citizenship often as title is
01:35
your regular working visa in germany and
01:37
these usually
01:38
are limited to a certain time period is
01:40
tied to your employment
01:42
and you don’t have that free access to
01:44
the labor market that you do with the
01:45
needle assuming the loveness usually the
01:47
thing is is if you’re an employee
01:49
you can only work for this company and
01:51
if you lose that job you lose your visa
01:54
one of the differences between the
01:55
needlesongs and lobness and full-on
01:57
german citizenship
01:58
is mainly you have the right to vote as
02:00
well as the fact that
02:02
even though your need allah’s alumnus is
02:04
not
02:05
limited to a certain time period it
02:08
does have the issue that if you are
02:11
living outside of germany
02:12
for more than six months in a row then
02:14
you lose your knee lessons and loudness
02:16
and of course if you guys have been
02:17
through this process or you have an
02:19
interesting story to share
02:20
about your process always try to comment
02:23
below because
02:24
it is very individual when it comes to
02:26
visas and all this stuff in germany
02:29
so perhaps my story may be useful to
02:31
some of you perhaps
02:33
not but let’s all just help each other
02:36
out a little bit
02:37
if possible and when it comes to
02:38
eligibility for permanent residency in
02:40
germany
02:41
this is also super individual and
02:44
there’s a lot of different cases and
02:46
there’s a lot of different time periods
02:47
typically for any non-eu citizen you are
02:50
able to apply for a
02:52
permanent residency in germany after a
02:54
period of having
02:55
consecutively lived in germany for five
02:57
years there are fast track cases that
02:59
will be under five years usually around
03:01
two or three and these would be such
03:03
things if you’ve graduated from a
03:04
german university if you’re married to a
03:06
german if you have an eu blue card or
03:09
if you’re regarded as a highly skilled
03:12
worker so
03:12
a professional in a certain area where
03:15
there’s a super high demand for people
03:17
to fill these jobs in germany
03:19
then usually you can get permanent
03:20
residency a bit quicker
03:22
but typically five years oh one other
03:25
fact though it’s good to know that
03:27
when it comes to being self-employed and
03:29
wanting to apply for permanent residency
03:31
yes you
03:32
are eligible for this fast track route
03:34
which is after three years
03:36
but they do really specify self-employed
03:39
versus freelancing
03:41
so if you’re a freelancer that does not
03:43
count for the fast track route to
03:44
permanent residency application
03:47
but if you’re self-employed it’s just
03:49
basically you need to be able to prove
03:50
that you have a business here it is very
03:52
financially stable
03:54
and all those decks are in a row and
03:56
then you should be able to
03:58
apply for permanent residency after
03:59
three years however i’m not applying
04:02
under that ground so if any of you guys
04:03
have experience with that please comment
04:05
below because
04:06
it might be a bit more useful to certain
04:09
people who clicked on this video
04:10
and so if you have been here for five
04:12
years and you want to apply for
04:13
permanent residency
04:14
the list you have to check off is the
04:17
following assuming you’ve had
04:18
a valid elephant health cell for the
04:20
last five years living in germany
04:22
you’re employed you have a steady income
04:25
you’re registered with the german
04:26
insurance then you should be pretty good
04:29
to go
04:29
however just double check you have as
04:32
well
04:33
documentation showing a minimum of 60
04:36
months that you’ve paid into
04:38
the social security scheme in germany
04:39
you will also need a b1 language exam
04:42
that you’ve passed proof of the
04:44
integrations exams
04:46
for germany in addition you have to have
04:48
a rental contract that you can
04:50
show is not limited and
04:54
interesting fact but they do want to
04:57
make sure
04:58
in your rental contract your flat is a
05:00
certain size
05:01
which i found to be a little interesting
05:03
because i know in munich
05:05
it’s very hard to find a flat and so in
05:09
general you can’t be
05:10
too choosy i thought it was a little bit
05:11
strange you know if you’re contributing
05:13
to everything and you’re working
05:15
all this time and you can prove it what
05:18
if
05:18
your flat’s not the right size but
05:22
it turned out not to be too much of a
05:23
big deal however
05:25
that’s just one of the other pieces of
05:26
documentation you’ll need if you’re
05:28
going to apply all right so this part
05:30
this is where it gets to be pretty
05:32
individual in in my situation a little
05:34
bit more frustrating
05:36
because when it came to the application
05:40
i was supposed to do this
05:41
last last year my appointment my
05:44
interview
05:45
oh also important to know most of the
05:47
times
05:48
it will be an interview so not just
05:51
going to the outlander pajara and
05:53
giving your documentation but they’ll
05:54
sit down and they’ll question you what
05:56
are your intentions with my country or
05:58
what is your plan long term why do you
06:00
want to stay here
06:01
just basically think of it as like
06:04
casual small talk about why you like
06:06
germany and why it’s your new home i
06:08
mean coming there with a pile of papers
06:10
showing
06:10
how much you’ve been paying taxes and
06:13
paying into the pension
06:14
and social security scheme and what a
06:16
good citizen you are
06:17
that puts all of those people there in a
06:20
pretty friendly mood i found
06:22
however i went in there everything was
06:24
great working perfectly
06:26
and then they told me they could not
06:28
because my passport was supposed to
06:30
expire
06:30
in 2021 even though it was 2019
06:35
still that year was not enough for them
06:38
to be able to grab me
06:40
might need lessons so the guy said okay
06:43
best i can do is give you one year
06:44
extension on your visa
06:45
go renew your passport bring it back
06:48
we’re all good to go and we will issue
06:49
you
06:50
your well earned and deserved permanent
06:53
residency couple months later
06:55
coven happened and it was
06:59
very hard to renew my passport in this
07:01
time 2020 december
07:02
i went in to give my application a nice
07:06
early 7 30 a.m appointment and i handed
07:09
it all my documents
07:10
of course i had to get my new passport i
07:12
had my biometric photo i had all my
07:14
contract course
07:16
nothing ever goes super smooth at this
07:18
place so the problem i faced was that
07:21
i did not have cash to pay for my new
07:25
residence permit i mean you think the
07:28
last year
07:29
germany really has gotten a bit more
07:31
modern it’s become
07:32
a lot more common to buy small purchases
07:34
with carts in germany
07:35
which so wonderful however
07:38
cash is still king and you
07:41
always need to have that baguette divide
07:44
the coffin munich is actually right now
07:46
sort of under construction and it was
07:48
the trickiest thing
07:49
ever to find a cash machine in like 25
07:54
minutes and i was so stressed and i was
07:56
like oh goodness what happens
07:58
if if you know i go get the money and
08:00
then i come back and i’m too late and
08:02
they tell me
08:02
oh okay sorry make another appointment
08:04
we can’t finish it and i was running
08:06
around trying to get everything
08:07
and then i finally did and they were so
08:10
lovely and they were so
08:12
nice it was just crazy yeah it
08:15
definitely
08:16
is just the most oh biggest relief and
08:19
i’m so so excited
08:20
and i really hope you guys in the
08:23
process of it or wanting to apply for it
08:25
it goes
08:26
well because uh just thinking of the
08:29
fact that i will not have to go
08:30
regularly
08:31
and get my visa renewed and have to deal
08:33
with all that stuff is just
08:36
ah beautiful i hope you guys are having
08:38
a nice time not too much stress with
08:40
your visas
08:41
if you found this video helpful don’t
08:43
forget to give me a thumbs up it really
08:45
helps my channel
08:46
and i will talk to you guys next time

An American’s guide to food allergies in Germany: Gluten- and lactose-free shopping tips

Germany is well known for its abundance of bread and beer, but unfortunately for those with gluten allergies or other food intolerances, this can be a bit tricky.

So here’s a little video I thought I’d share about where to shop (and what you can get) in german grocery stores that help those of you with food allergies (:

Released on Feb. 10, 2021

Video transcript: 00:00
no matter where you go you can always at
00:02
least find some
00:03
gluten-free pasta the possibilities
00:07
are in fact endless
00:13
hello everybody welcome back to my
00:15
channel if you don’t already know
00:18
my name is aspen i’m an american living
00:20
in the fantastic meeting germany
00:23
and i talk about what it’s like living
00:25
abroad so basically the cliche
00:27
and well just the
00:30
truth of it is is that germany is a very
00:33
bread heavy country just bread really
00:36
like bread
00:37
and dairy and meat and all of that stuff
00:41
that might be a little bit tricky if you
00:43
have any food intolerances or if you’re
00:45
maybe just a more plant-based
00:47
in general when it comes to your dietary
00:49
preferences
00:50
to lay the foundation myself me
00:53
i have a bunch of not very cool
00:56
allergies
00:57
and a bunch of those are food allergies
01:00
so as much as i love bread as much as i
01:04
love kesa i really
01:07
cannot eat it often and should not
01:11
be eating it often so the first couple
01:14
years i was here
01:15
i did have the problem to wear there was
01:17
not a lot of options for
01:19
alternative products i can buy food just
01:21
became really not that fun
01:23
really not that great however recently
01:25
there’s been a ton a ton of new ones
01:27
and it’s the most exciting thing ever
01:29
first things first
01:30
gluten allergies this is actually been
01:33
really cool the past years because
01:35
at all the main stores even some of the
01:38
discounter ones like aldi
01:40
or penny and these ones they have
01:42
gluten-free products
01:43
which is the most exciting thing in the
01:46
world and no matter where you go you can
01:48
always at least
01:48
find some gluten-free pasta so
01:52
the possibilities are in fact
01:55
endless no bad jokes aside you can find
01:59
bazillion different types of gluten-free
02:01
bread which is in itself
02:02
really really cool there is tons and
02:04
tons of
02:05
different gluten-free pre-mixed flour
02:08
options and varieties
02:09
quick educational corner gluten is a
02:12
family of proteins that’s found in
02:14
certain types of grain biggest example
02:16
would be wheat
02:16
so if you do love baking if you do love
02:18
cooking with
02:20
flour it can be very tricky with
02:23
gluten-free variations of flour because
02:26
unfortunately
02:27
this gluten protein is what binds
02:30
everything together gives you this
02:31
really nice sticky texture has these
02:34
great reactions you need
02:35
to get fluffy and light baked goods and
02:39
bread
02:40
whereas without the gluten everything
02:42
doesn’t quite stick together it doesn’t
02:44
quite
02:45
work as well so having the options to
02:47
find pre-made
02:48
guaranteed mixtures of gluten-free flour
02:52
that work well
02:52
it’s it’s absolutely my favorite thing
02:55
there’s snacks like from like pretzels
02:57
or pretzel sticks to
02:59
various biscuits and baked goods even
03:02
and the cool thing is like at christmas
03:04
a lot of the stores the past years now
03:06
come out with all these
03:08
german christmas cookies that are gluten
03:09
free like lab cooking
03:11
and simpsiana and all of this stuff and
03:14
so you’re like
03:15
oh yes i’m always included in the fun
03:19
okay but wait before i get too excited
03:21
before i ramble too much
03:22
guys guys guys if this video is helpful
03:26
so far please give me a
03:29
great big thumbs up it lets me know if i
03:33
should continue making this content not
03:34
only because i enjoy it but because it
03:36
helps you as well
03:37
and it’s pretty nice so next move we go
03:40
to lactose allergies
03:42
so basically any milk products some
03:45
people of course
03:46
cannot have milk cannot have cheese
03:48
cannot have anything and they have
03:49
terrible reactions
03:50
luckily for me it’s mainly milk
03:54
that if i drink i’m gonna throw up
03:58
not really a good idea i can have like a
04:01
little bit
04:02
sometimes mix in with stuff i can have
04:03
like a little
04:05
little smidge of ice cream now and then
04:07
but it’s always best to stay away from
04:09
it
04:10
and luckily in germany this is not hard
04:14
to do
04:14
and it does not get boring my one true
04:17
love is oat milk
04:18
this is the best thing ever the flavor
04:20
is amazing it goes it blends with
04:23
everything it’s good in my tea
04:24
it’s good in my food it’s good in my
04:27
coffee it’s just
04:28
what can it not i never get tired of it
04:31
however in germany it’s not just that
04:34
you can get
04:35
soy milk or oat milk but you can also
04:37
get almond milk you can also get cashew
04:40
milk you can also get
04:42
coconut milk rice milk just
04:45
all the milks and they’ve even started
04:47
giving more options like oatmeal creme
04:49
fraiche and
04:50
different types of little dairy cooking
04:53
products you know like there’s a soya or
04:55
well oat milk as well cream for cooking
04:58
which is
04:59
awesome if like you’re making some sort
05:00
of tart or soup
05:03
so great they have tons and tons of
05:06
dairy-free yogurt just
05:08
basically has all the same so you got oh
05:10
you got coconut
05:11
you even have soy
05:14
and oat base gear which is just
05:18
the bomb.com oh you can also get
05:21
lactose free crack is something
05:24
where
05:25
it’s this huge staple in germany and we
05:28
don’t really have it in the states
05:29
if you try to translate it with any
05:31
trend just general translator it says
05:34
curd and that’s not really
05:37
that doesn’t make any sense to say what
05:39
it is but imagine
05:40
like greek yogurt or skier some
05:43
super thick one but like double c
05:47
thick dairy product like super healthy
05:50
it’s low calorie it’s super high protein
05:53
it’s
05:54
amazing you can mix it with anything put
05:56
it in anything it’s so good
05:58
you can get those now with all these
06:00
different varieties
06:01
of plant-based and nut milks
06:04
and it’s just i love being included
06:08
and then it’s not even those things that
06:09
are exciting but the fact
06:11
that convenience foods you can also get
06:14
so for example
06:15
at irica and veva i’ve seen
06:20
and it’s consistent now they have frozen
06:23
pizzas
06:24
that are gluten free and lactose free
06:27
okay i’m not a big pizza person but
06:29
every once in a while and i really
06:31
really want one i don’t want to make it
06:32
homemade because i don’t have time for
06:33
that you gotta wait ages for your dough
06:35
to rise and i just
06:37
i just want some gross like freezer
06:40
pizza you know
06:41
and they have it it’s just
06:46
actually the other day too i saw riva
06:48
they have a vegan frozen pizza
06:50
so if y’all are no animal product at all
06:55
type people then check it out
06:58
actually in general if you’re vegetarian
07:00
or vegan there are tons and tons of
07:01
options as well in grocery stores that
07:03
are expanding
07:04
for you know meat-free
07:07
meat substitutes i mean it’s just crazy
07:11
there’s tons of like rows of different
07:12
lunch meats and sausages
07:14
and i even saw the other day this uh one
07:17
that was like
07:19
dooner but
07:22
not me
07:27
definitely not for me but perhaps
07:31
for you guys that’s what you both
07:33
looking for sweet treats and stuff too
07:35
there’s this really really good line of
07:37
vegan gummy bears i always get
07:39
so good they have these ones they’re
07:40
called fred fiacca fair girls piglets
07:43
really cute
07:44
but they’re so soft and they’re so tasty
07:46
and just
07:47
[Music]
07:48
great i recommend those for sweet treat
07:50
and if you’re an ice cream lover
07:52
i recently just found my favorite new
07:54
ice cream
07:55
and it’s completely plant-based it’s
07:57
called no moo so
07:59
cute name bonus point but also they have
08:02
really amazing flavors they have this
08:03
like
08:04
salted peanut one that’s just they also
08:07
have this apple one too
08:09
which what is the name
08:13
of the apple food they have just kinda
08:15
box the like
08:16
like the cooked apple with them
08:20
whatever that is i can’t remember the
08:21
name at the moment i’ll probably put the
08:23
text here when i’m editing and
08:24
like a goober but they have that flavor
08:28
too and it’s
08:29
it’s just honestly the best the best so
08:34
obviously i’m kind of hungry right now
08:36
and this video is
08:38
going downhill so i will leave you with
08:41
those
08:41
informations and hopefully that has made
08:44
your life in germany
08:46
as improved as it has mine i will talk
08:48
to you guys next time
08:52
ciao
